He gave a talk at the Chicago public library a few years before he died. He lived in the Chicago suburbs. I had the first four books in hardcover and dust jacket. He signed them all. He was very nice. I mentioned that I was struck by the scene in the fourth book where the protagonist is in an army under bombardment. I said it reminded me of World War I memoirs. He seemed pleased that I took particular note of that section, and said it was based on his personal experience in the Korean War.
These all sound good. I will brag that I got my copy of The Shadow of the Torturer autographed by Gene Wolfe many years ago.
